A Great day at Storm!

We went up tp Storm today, and it was a beautiful day for Storm. When we arrived at The Stained Glass for breakfast, it was 24 degrees. With a light breeze. By the time we got to the lake it had warmed up to 26, and the sun was out. The parking lot was covered with about 6 to 8" of snow. We had to use 4-wheel drive to get in. I did 4 dives, Corrine and Katy were ground support. Water temps were 59 degrees from 1' to 124'. Vis was 8' to 10'. I had some great dives, and had a chance to practice skills. I did dive # 200 for the year today, 124', 6 minutes of deco.

Start of the winter diving season at Storm, for me!

Headed up to Storm this morning, was hoping to meet with Baywatch, but they were diving in the afternoon and I had to be home early afternoon. I had breakfast at The Stained Glass, then arrived at the dive site at 8:30. It was 24 degrees with gusty winds. So, not to bad for Storm. There was about 3/4 of an inch of snow and the roads were a little icy. I geared up for my first dive, vis wasn't very good. 6' at best, worse as you got deeper. When I surfaced, I found that Jeff and Sara from York Pa. had arrived. By now it had warmed up to 34 degrees, and the snow had melted. It turned into a nice day. We did another dive, out to the dam and back, a lot of current today!! Baywatch and crew picked the best part of the day for sure. Wind was slowing, and clouds were leaving, and sun was bright. A good start to The winter at Storm.

Cavern cert. and a lot of divng

We just returned from two weeks of diving in Florida. Corrine, our friend Marshall, and I got our cavern certification. We arrived Thursday evening, two days before the class. On Friday we went to Troy Springs to fine tune for the class, pick up a season park pass, and just have some fun diving. We headed down to the cave entrance at 70' to check it out, a lot of flow. We hung out here and in the wide open cavern. More of an overhang than a cavern. The water s a clear green, I shot a bag and Corrine got a picture of it sitting on the surface from 60'. On our next dive we headed out to the spring run to check out what is left of the civil war steam ship The Madison. Very shallow, but cool. On Saturday we all met at Ginnie Springs to start the class. Ginnie is great, the vis is phenomenal!! A bright crystal blue. I was a bit over wrought when I found out I would have to dive a single tank, I haven't dove a single tank in a year. Truth be told I was a little worried, I know my rig, but I wasn't sure how different it would be in a single. It turned out ok though. After a bit of huffing on my part. We did land drills, then hit the water. Our first dive was a tour, we went to the grate at the entrance to the cave. You can hold onto the grate and the flow whips you around like a flag in the wind. We did three dives here then moved up river about 200 yards and dove Devils ear, Devils eye, and Little Devil. Devils ear has a high flow, and is a vertical crack leading down to a small cavern. It's a lot of work, but it's worth it. The next day we went to Orange Grove, which is part of the Peacock system. On the way we stopped at Cave Excursions, a local dive shop. We missed it on the way up, and had to turn around. It's easy to miss, it looks like any other house in the area. But, do they have a great set up. You back your vehicle into the driveway, and open the tailgate. They have long whips, and they hook-up all of your tanks in your vehicle!! No lugging heavy tanks. The people at cave ex. are great, they took really good care of us. Orange Grove is covered with duck weed, it looks terrible, but is really great. The vis is great. There are to caverns, and caves here. One at about 60', and one that drops to 90'.
We did the deep cave first, Corrine led in, it is narrow, twisty, and vertical. I led the second dive into the shallow cavern, it is a long straight narrow tunnel. Marshall led the third to the deep cavern. On Monday we went back to Orange Grove as certified cavern divers. Tues day we went back to Ginnie, our first dive we did the grand tour, sort of checked out the entire cavern, and practiced running reels. Corrine tried out the camera, she got some great pics. On the second dive we stayed in the shallow area and took more pictures. Corrine and I then moved over to the Devils system, and did all three. Marshall was having ear problems so he sat this one out. We ran into some other divers coming out of The Ear, doing their deco on the log. We saw saw small juvenile flounder in the run between the ear and the eye. n the evening we took our instructor and dive masters out to eat in High Springs. We had a good meal and a great time. For Marshalls last day we dove Peacock 1. There are two caverns one is Pothole, the other is Peanut. The lines here run all the way to the entrance, so you do not have to run a reel. We spent the next two days at dema. Then on Saturday we drove down to Pompano Beach so I could dive the Hydro Atlantic. Only to discover that seas were at 9', no one diving in these conditions. Of course I should have called before we drove down, with Ida in the area. But, I didn't!! We took a walk on the beach, and drove back up to Kissimee and got a room. We had been camping until now, but didn't feel like setting up camp for one night. We slept in the next morning, then had breakfast, and headed over to Manatee springs to dive Catfish Hole. This is a sink about 400' above Manatee springs. Like Orange Grove it is covered with duck weed. It is really a large opening in the side of the cave. There is a large upper cavern, and a smaller lower cavern. With, of course a lot of catfish. Again, visibility was great. On Sunday night we stayed at the famous Cadillac Motel. An older motel, but well maintained, and clean. On Monday we decided to check out Jug Hole{aka Blue Hole}. It's a ten minute walk in to the spring, but on a very well maintained trail. The spring is beautiful, and you can see the opening of the cavern from the wooden decks they have erected. The water is a crystal blue, very beautiful. The park service provides a four wheel garden cart for carrying your gear in, very handy. To enter this sink you center yourself on the surface boil and dump the air from your bc. Then you drop through the 6' diameter hole into the upper cavern. Then you fight the current into the lower cavern. The cave entrance is side mount only. This is our favorite cavern so far. Our final day we did two dives in at Peacock, both in pothole tunnel. We saw some albino crayfish, some tiny juvenile crayfish, and some catfish. There were a number of divers here today, so t was interesting getting in and out of the cave. We took two days to drive home, all in the heavy rain from Ida.

Tourist in DC- Diving Pumpkin Dive at Millbrook.

On Saturday Corrine and I went to DC to check out some museums and play tourist. We started at the Natural History Museum, saw the Darwin exhibit, and the ocean exhibit. They were both great. Then we went to the Native American museum. This was my first time to this museum. We didn't get to see the entire museum, just too big. But, we will be back. We parked at Shady Grove metro, and took the subway in from there. On the way back it rained quite hard, and we got quite wet!!

Well, we had a great day at Millbrook. We saw a lot of friends we hadn't seen in a while. Did some diving, and had a burger with the group. We did 2 dives, Corrine, Jeremy,Larry, and I. Then I did one solo dive. Vis wasn't as good as last week, but still 30' plus in most places. Good Friends, Good diving. A great day!!

A Brisk weekend at Millbrook!

Saturday I went down by myself, and did a couple of solo dives. Vis is incredible now, 25'. I love my new shearwater dive computer!! It rained all day, so there weren't many people out. Corrine and I went back down today, no rain, but wind. Dave and the Blue Marble Gang were down for a DM checkout. Quite a shock for Dave, yesterday he was diving in the Virgin islands. We did two dives, 1 deep, and 1 shallow to the cove cruiser. We saw some things today that we haven't seen in a long time!!

DC diveshow&Demo day at Millbrook

This past weekend was a good dive weekend for our area. We had the dive show on saturday, and demo days at Millbrook on sunday. The show was small, but very enjoyable. We met some old friends and some new friends, and did a lot of story telling. Saw a lot of interesting dive destinations, hopefully we will get to some of them one day! Saw a great inflatible, a Patten inflatable, that I would love to have. Only $24000.00, but a six pack cat that will do 30 knots!! Sunday Corrine and I tried the dive rite nomad side mount system. We loved it,easy trim, less drag, easy to get to the water, and very stable in the water. We tried ocean reefs full face mask with comm. It was cool, it keeps your face warm, and is very comfortable.

Weekend at Rawlings

We went to Rawlings for the weekend, so Corrine could finish up her wreck course. And, dive with Dori some to work out some issues with her new drysuit, and her harness set-up. She did 5 dives on saturday, with richard, and then 3 dives with dori on sunday. It really helped a lot, they're great people, and fun to be with!! There were a lot of people along on the trip just doing fun dives, so I got in 5 dives on saturday, and 3 on sunday with various partners. I know the quarry well, so I was able to show others the sights. It was a lot of fun!!

Diving&cabinet building, again!!

I built Corrine a sewing cabinet on saturday. So she would have a place to put her shadow box, and some drawers to store things in. On Sunday I went to Millbrook. Did three dives with Davey, Jeff,Jeremy, and Jim. Dori and Richard, Jay, and the Demeos were down. It was great seeing all the gang and talking and diving. Some of us went to the local burger joint afterwards, for burgers and shakes. Weather was great and vis was a lot better deep!!

Diving&cabinet building

Saturday I went diving at Millbrook with Jeff, and Larry. We did 2 dives, 1 deco dive to 83', and 1 skills&drills dive to 37' to work on reel deployment. 2 good dives, with good friends. Today, I built my wife a cutting table for her sewing room. It turned out very nice, especially considering I built it in my driveway with hand tools.

Good Day-Bad Day!

Well a friend gave me a pair of Evo drysuit boots. So today I picked up a pair of Slip stream fins to go with them. The good news, I love them, and got in two dives at Millbrook in them. The bad news, as I was pulling the drysuit over my head to get ready for a third dive, the neck seal tore. End of diving for the day!! Looks like I'll be diving wet for a while.

Anniversary diving at Jocassee!!

It's our 5th wedding anniversary, so we decided to go diving at Lake Jocassee. Then spend some time in Asheville NC., and come back as far as we could on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Well, the diving went great. We dove with Off the Wall Charters in salem SC., a great group of people. On saturday we went to a location known as the wall. We anchored at the wall in 65' of water, near the junk, a 65' wooden sailing junk. The plan was for Corrine and I to head to the junk, then she would hang there while I continued on down the wall to about 200'. Another diver, aned at that point, and lso named Joe, showed me the deep line, and joined me down to 150'. He turned at that point and I continued on to 200'. There was a nice propane grill at 175'. I spent 10 minutes at 200', then returned to the junk at 65' and joined Corrine for the rest of the dive. Of course there were a few deco stops along the way. Our 2nd dive we checked the things on the ledge. We camped at Devils Fork state park Friday and Saturday night, a very nice park, we reserved the last available spot for this weekend!! On sunday we did two dives on the graveyard, 137', and 152'. This is the graveyard that was in the last scene of the movie deliverance. It was a nice dive, vis around 15'. The skipper took the boat out on sunday, even though it was only Corrine and I!! The rest of our vavation we played tourist in Brevard, asheville, and travelled back on the blue ridge parkway. We spent our last night in a motel in Linville. We hiked to Linville falls, saw Grandfather mountain, and went to Mast general store, a neat old time general store. A great vacationand anniversary!!

Diving, and more diving!

I haven't blogged in a few weeks, and I've done a good bit of diving. 2 weekends ago I went to Lake Rawlings with The crew. I went down to take a wreck diving course, and did 6 dives on saturday, and 3 dives on sunday. I had a great weekend, and learned a lot. The next weekend Corrine and I went to Mt. Storm on easter sunday, it was a little cool on the surface, and the same 55 degrees in the water. We took the dutch oven and I cooked a hunters breakfast, then fixed fried bologna sandwiches for lunch. We did 2 dives, the 1st to 117', and the 2nd to 30'. We had a good day, and had a lot of fun. Today I went to Guppy Gulch to dive with the crew again, it was a warm day, but water temps at 40' were 38 degrees, cold!!!! After the dive we stopped in Delta Plane for pizza. Great pizza!

Millbrook cold water, warm day!!

We had a beautiful day at millbrook today, warm and sunny. Quite a change from what we have been use to. Davey started his TDI DM course today, and I got in 2 great solo dives. My first dive was a deco dive, 51 minutes at 86', about 41 degrees at the bottom. My 2nd dive was to 84' for 31 minutes, on this dive I finally located the row boat, and car. They are on the ridge just north of the plane.

Dive at Mt. Storm

Corrine, Davey, and I went to stom today, it was a lot warmer today than it has been. About 46 degrees!! Of course the water temps were the same, 54 degrees. Today there were some others there. 1st time weve had company in a long time. We finally met some people we new on line, nice to finally put a face to the names. We did a 45 minute deco dive to 120'. Vis at 120' was 0', everywhere else 6' to 8'. Nice to see other divers around for a change.

Chilly willy at Millbrook!

Davey and I went down to Millbrook today to dive, and pick up our deco, adv. nitrox, and my solo cards. It was a warm day, 65 degrees. But, the water temps were quite chilly, 37 degrees from 30' down. We dropped to 85', and went from the plane to the RV and back. A short deco and back to beach 2 1/2. Quite a few people showed up for the dive today, several classes going on. Mostly deco, trimix, or rebreather.

Solo Mt. Storm

I was supposed to go to guppy gulch with dori's crew today, but she got sick with what Davey's had all week. So' I decided to head to Storm alone. I didn't feel like eating breakfast today, so I headed to the lake. Temps were about 24, but the wind was blowing around 25mph, gusting to 30mph. I sat in the truck for a while, deciding if I was really going to get in the water. After 2 failed attempts, got back in the truck twice saying I wasn't going to dive. But, in the end I decided to go for it. I did a deco dive to 121', practiced skills, and got out after 1 hour. Everything froze before I got to the truck, so I left everything together and sorted it out when I got home. It was a trick zipping my back entry dry suit by myself for the first time. All in all a good time!!
